What is a Panama hat, really?
It is hand-woven in Ecuador from toquilla straw. “Panama” is a historic trade name, not the place it is made.
How do I know it is authentic?
Toquilla fibre, even weave, crown finish and the PanamaHatters mark. Authenticity is read up close, not from a slogan.
Can I roll it into a tube?
Not if you want to keep it. Rolling creates micro-creases and a wavy brim. Travel with a hat box or travel bag.
Is it rain-proof?
No. Water warps and weakens toquilla. Shield it, and if it gets wet let it dry naturally — never with a hairdryer.
How do I choose the size?
Measure circumference about one centimetre above the ear, without tightening. Straw can ease slightly in heat.
What drives the price?
Hours of work, weave fineness, straw evenness, the weaver’s origin, and Italian finishing.
How do I care for it?
No direct water, alcohol or heat. Dry cloth or a soft eraser, air-dry the sweatband, store the shape in a box.
How long does it last?
Years, if you protect it from rain, crushing and a hot car. An authentic Panama can be re-blocked.
