Before you buy
What is a Panama hat, really?
It is hand-woven in Ecuador from toquilla straw. “Panama” is a historic trade name, not the place it is made.
How do I know it is authentic?
Toquilla fibre, even weave, crown finish and the PanamaHatters mark. Authenticity is read up close, not from a slogan.
Can I roll it into a tube?
Not if you want to keep it. Rolling creates micro-creases and a wavy brim. Travel with a hat box or travel bag.
Is it rain-proof?
No. Water warps and weakens toquilla. Shield it, and if it gets wet let it dry naturally — never with a hairdryer.
How do I choose the size?
Measure circumference about one centimetre above the ear, without tightening. Straw can ease slightly in heat.
What drives the price?
Hours of work, weave fineness, straw evenness, the weaver’s origin, and Italian finishing.
How do I care for it?
No direct water, alcohol or heat. Dry cloth or a soft eraser, air-dry the sweatband, store the shape in a box.
How long does it last?
Years, if you protect it from rain, crushing and a hot car. An authentic Panama can be re-blocked.
Montecristi or Cuenca?
Two Ecuadorian weaving territories. Montecristi is often finer; Cuenca more widespread. Quality is density and evenness, not only the village name.
Which brim for my face?
Wider brim on round or square faces; tighter on fine faces. The crown must sit in proportion, not copy a photograph.
Choice and style
Which brim for sun, city, ceremony?
About 6–7 cm for sun, 5–6 cm in the city. Black band for events. Travel wants a stable shape, not a rolled hat.
What do I wear it with?
Linen, seersucker, resort, wedding guest. Fedora, trilby and porkpie in toquilla remain hats, not a gender.
Does it protect from the sun? Does it heat the head?
The brim shades; the weave breathes. It is not a helmet. It is shade and air.
Are there waterproof versions?
No. Treatments do not make a Panama rain-proof. We do not sell that claim.
When is it worn?
Spring and summer, and year-round in mild climates, with the right clothes.
Quality and after the order
Why ivory, yellow, or grey threads?
Natural toquilla colour. Evenness is rare. Straw darkens slightly with age: that is time, not a defect.
What is grade / cuenta?
Weaves counted per inch. Higher is finer. It is not the only criterion: evenness, form and finish matter as much.
How long for a custom piece?
Weeks: weave, block, band, check. Season stretches time. We say so before, not after.
Customs, returns, re-blocking?
Duties and returns live under Shipping and Returns. Re-blocking is a maison service, on request, not an automatic click.
Who wove my hat?
Ecuadorian hands, Italian selection and finish. The long story is on The Origin. We do not invent certificates we cannot show.
Care and real problems
Sweat, oil, makeup, salt, sunscreen?
Soft eraser or a face wipe, kept dry. No alcohol, no water and heat. If the mark stays, a workshop — not improvisation.
How do I pack it?
Rigid hat box or travel bag. Never crushed in a suitcase for long. Never in a hot car. Rest crown-down or on the sweatband, not on the brim.
Does it loosen or tighten?
Straw can ease a little. Inner tape or a maison adjustment.
If it warps?
Re-blocking by someone who knows. Steam only from experts. Prevention costs less than repair.
Dark halo on the inner band?
Dry the hat upside down, sweatband open, air moving. Do not trap humidity in the crown.
Stories, not checkout myths
Why “Panama” if it is Ecuadorian?
It shipped through the port of Panama. The name stayed. Birth is Ecuador. The Origin tells the rest.
Which myths to drop?
Not every hat rolls. They are not waterproof. A high grade is not “best for everyone”.
Is it a men’s hat?
No. It is a hat. Style belongs to whoever wears it.
Does it flatten the hair?
The right fit and an open weave reduce the mark. A tight size increases it.
